Rock Creek Park Maternity Session | Washington DC Maternity Photographer

This family’s maternity session was one of my first after having to shutdown due to the pandemic, and it felt SO great to get back to work after so much time away. As a Washington DC maternity photographer, it was hard to see families unable to document special milestones like a pregnancy. I am so thankful to be able to safely do this again!

I met these two (well, three!) for their maternity session at Rock Creek Park in Washington DC. The weather that summer evening was warm, but perfect!

It was such a joy to work with these first time parents. Mom-to-be was so beautiful and glowing! I know being pregnant during a pandemic is difficult, but all I could see on Mom’s face was her excitement for this new little bundle of joy to arrive. We were able to get to know each other as we walked to one of my favorite fields in the park.

Some of my favorite portraits from this session were when we stopped in the high grass. The way Dad is looking at Mom was pure magic. Their connection and love was so evident.

This is one of the many reasons, I believe everyone needs maternity portraits, especially after a year like 2020.

why documenting your pregnancy is a must | maternity photographer in Washington DC

I truly feel for all of the parents who are expecting during this pandemic. I know many have missed traditional baby showers and having Dad at doctor appointments.

That’s why I created a client experience that makes planning for your maternity session easy. I want all of my pregnant Moms to feel beautiful and celebrated. Many couples have told me that after their session they felt even more connected to their partner. Your session gives you a moment of time to take in this incredible gift you’ve been given, together.

Sadly I missed out on a maternity session with my first two kids, but so glad that I did it with our third. I absolutely cherish my maternity portraits and looking at them takes me right back to that precious time in my life for my family. My kids also love looking at photos of my pregnant belly too!

It’s my hope that your portraits will reflect the love and anticipation you have for your baby. They will serve as a beautiful reminder of the good that came out of a crazy year!

Prioritizing what matters | Washington DC Newborn Photographer

“We don’t need a lot of photos, just a few of the kids.”

Raise your hand if you’ve said that before.

I’ll admit, I found myself saying that last year too. Let’s be honest, 2020 was a challenge for us moms.

We adapted to change, juggled all of the things on the to-do list, and met new challenges with renewed strength that maybe we didn’t even realize we had. (Hello, virtual learning! I think we all deserve an award for that!)

I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard mamas say they are waiting to schedule a session, though. Everything from gaining the “quarantine 15”, to not being able to get to the salon, to just not feeling like they are themselves, to swearing its the last thing they could get their spouse to agree to…you get the picture. As a Washington DC newborn and maternity photographer, and a Mom myself, I get it. We are our own worst critic and the stress of preparing for a photoshoot when you can’t even properly go try on clothes seems daunting.

But… portraits with your kids are important. Especially after the year we have had.

You are part of their story and you shouldn’t always be the picture-taker.

Like many of you, we’ve spent more time at home than ever in the past year. Seeing what was going on in the world was a reminder that no matter how I feel about myself, time is fleeting. Being in the portrait with your family is more important than ever.

But what good is being in the photos if the images only live on our hard drives? There is something to be said about how it makes your children feel to see their portraits on the wall. And not just portraits of them – some with Mom and Dad there too. Or having albums to sift through with your kids by your side.

While at home this year I realized there are other ways I can more fully serve my clients.

As a mom of three, I know the effort it takes just to show up for a family portrait session.

I’m even more intentional about what matters as both a mom myself and your photographer. That is why I’m so passionate about giving you a portrait experience that is easy and stress-free.

you deserve a full service client experience | Washington DC Newborn and Maternity Photographer

That means from the moment you book to when your framed heirloom prints are in your hands, I’m here to help you through every step. Every session is a truly custom experience with personalized styling recommendations, a detailed session guide, and pre-session questionnaire. Plus, there are a few dress options to borrow from my growing client wardrobe! This process helps me get to know your family and provide you with a gallery that will pull at your heartstrings!

Your portraits should be a reflection of your family in this season of life. So in this new year, I am excited to document more real moments. I am excited for more joyful, natural expressions with kids who are free to play and be themselves. And I can’t wait to see what that looks like for your family!

Whether it’s feeling the sun on your faces as your kids played or the love you have for that sweet newborn – your photos should make you feel something when you look at them. That way, when your newborn becomes a toddler, when they go off to school, or when they have kids of their own – your portraits will take you back to those joyful moments.

And you won’t have to worry about what to do with your images, because I have so many beautiful new frames and options to help with that too!

I am so inspired by the families who have already booked this year, and cannot wait to meet all of the new additions to the LRG Portraits family.

Fall is coming

I know, I know, I am not ready for it to be fall either…but…fall sessions are booking and the colors in this November session from last year were calling to me today. And this dress…When mom and I were discussing what to wear, I saw this dress and knew it would pop against the beautiful fall foliage. Wow, did it do that and then some!! LOVE jewel tones for fall! Makes my little photographer heart sing when a vision comes together in a such an amazing way. I always say wardrobe plays such a key role in a session and, this, alongside her girls beautiful Zara outfits was pure magic.

If you are interested in a fall session I recommend reaching out to me now to book your session. Weekends are currently in high demand, and some of the most popular dates have already filled.  I always feel so bad having to turn a client away because I don’t have the dates they want available so please don’t wait to call. For previous clients looking for my Fall Mini Sessions, these will be announced the last week in August (via email) and then any remaining spots will open up to new clients in early September. To inquire about a session for fall or anytime of the year, please reach out anytime.

My happy place

If you follow me, then you know I am drawn to sessions in fields, beaches (wish I had one closer), rivers, farms, etc or anywhere really with wide open spaces. I think from living in landlocked downtown DC I crave a little room to breath with my photography and would happily drive anywhere to get that open feeling.

As you can imagine, I am always so excited when a client requests Butlers Orchard for their session. I have a bunch of sessions coming up at Butlers and can’t wait to get out and see more of their beautiful farm. There are so many places to explore with families and its always changes depending on what they are growing or whats being harvested/picked. Whether its strawberry picking in May/June to the changing leaves/apple picking in the fall, it such a special place for a session. It also means that each session is a unique experience for your family.

Have a beach house, farm house or somewhere special you want to photograph your kids? Have camera, will travel! Let’s make some memories and create your own custom session! Inquiries lrgportraits@gmail.com

Rainy Days

At the moment I kind of feel like screaming at the weather gods. This spring has just been so unpredictable. 4 sessions scheduled for this week and early next week and unless by some miracle they are all going to have to be rescheduled. Boo rain. On a brighter note, it’s on rainy dreary days, that I find myself daydreaming (and wanting to blog!) about previous sessions because they give me so much JOY when the weather just isn’t.

I especially love looking back at lifestyle sessions on rainy days. Lifestyle sessions are each so unique as no two families are alike and they are always fun and comfortable. I love being a little fly on the wall capturing these incredible moments of a new baby coming home or siblings working together to build something. Love seeing your kids personalities shine in their own spaces! These sessions are wonderful experiences for your family and are done in the comfort of your home. Best part, the weather can be sunny or raining cats and dogs!

If you are looking for a great family experience as we wade through the deluge of water that seems to never end, I am offering a $100 print credit towards indoor sessions booked in the month of June. To take advantage of this special, sessions must be booked by May 25th, 2018. I only have a couple spots so please inquire for more specifics. Or if you are interested in an outdoor session, I have one spot left in June, three in July and 1 or 2 in August. I am also now taking bookings for fall and they are booking up much quicker than last year so if you want fall, please reach out to lock in a date. Hope to meet you and your family (or growing family) very soon!
