With so many family sessions coming up this Spring and Summer, I’m excited to share this guide for what to wear for your family photos! It is my hope that it is a helpful visual for you as you plan for your portrait session.
If you’re joining me for your Washington DC family photography session, you do have access to my growing Client Wardrobe! However, I know with Spring and Summer it can be fun to add new florals to your own wardrobe. I thought this would be a great visual to show you how I recommend pairing prints and color families for your session!
What to Wear for your Family Photos | Spring and Summer
With the humidity here in the Washington DC region, I always recommend choosing breathable fabrics for the family and flowy dresses for Mom!
Pro tip: Choose Mom’s dress first because we are always the hardest to shop for. Then use the color families (seen in the circles on the inspiration boards!) to find coordinating outfits for the rest of the family.
For Dad
Fabrics like linen and chambray are great because they are breathable and can be found in a variety of neutral colors during these Spring and Summer months. The linen texture also photographs beautifully!
Despite the heat, I do still recommend Dads wear pants instead of shorts with closed-toe shoes. It makes for a more classic look for your portraits.
My favorite places to shop for Dad are J.Crew and Old Navy.
For Mom
Textures like lace, eyelet and linen are beautiful for Mom to wear for your family photos.
Neutrals, soft pastels and small print florals are perfect for your family session in the Washington, DC area. They will ensure your images still look timeless years from now when displayed around your home!
My favorite places to shop for Mom are Red Dress Boutique, ASOS, Rachel Pally, Baltic Born, and Morning Lavender.
For Kids
The same goes for kids in terms of textures and color families for your family photo session! For toddlers and babies, rompers and bubbles paired with sandals are so sweet for portraits. Ruffle or flutter sleeves are also great for little girls.
For older siblings, I recommend henleys with light pants or shorts for boys and a sweet dress for girls! Jumpsuits can also be fun for the older girls!
My favorite places to shop for kids are Zara, Jamie Kay, Rylee and Cru, Maisonette, Noralee and H&M.
In the final two inspiration boards, I went with a cool toned option (blues, greens, and white) and a warm toned option (blush, tan, and off white). By keeping everyone in cool or warm tones you’ll be able to easily coordinate without having clashing colors!
